2004 fellowships announced.

IEAS announces its 2004-2005 fellowship competition for continuing graduate students in East Asian Studies. Approximately ten competitive awards of up to $6000 are available. Successful applicants should propose a coherent plan of research/study that will result in tangible progress towards their graduate degree. Applications are due Wednesday, April 21, 2004.

Jane Kaneko retires.

Jane Kaneko, IEAS Business Officer, will retire in late June after almost forty years of service to the university. Jane has worked at the Institute of East Asian Studies since its inception in 1978. Before that time she worked at the Center for Chinese Studies, for Health Sciences, and at University Extension. In her twenty six years at IEAS, Jane has been responsible for nearly all the business functions of the Institute, including fiscal management, personnel, and payroll. She has seen the Institute through times of enormous growth and change.

IEAS announces new fellows program.

IEAS announces a new program for mid-career professionals in business, law, government, industry and related fields to become Fellows at the Institute in order to broaden their perspectives on East Asia and to pursue their career development goals through the resources available at Berkeley.

September 2, 2003

CJS hosted Japan's blue-ribbon commission on constitutional reform.

On September 2, the Center for Japanese Studies hosted Japan's blue-ribbon commission on constitutional reform, which is conducting research into revising the constitution, including considering the possibility of revising Article 9 that states that Japan will not maintain military forces or other war potential. Joan Kask is promoted to Assistant Dean of IAS.

Joan Kask, who has been Assistant Director at IEAS for fifteen years, has been promoted to the position of Assistant Dean at International and Area Studies at the University. The Dean of International and Area Studies oversees IEAS and all other international programs on campus, including all of the Title VI centers, International and Area Studies Teaching Programs, the Berkeley Program for Study Abroad, Services for International Students and Scholars, and International House.

IEAS hosts 2003 CSCAP meeting

On March 14 and 15, 2003, the Institute of East Asian Studies hosted an international meeting occurred on our campus that brought together delegates from North Korea and ten other countries. Sponsored by the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asian Pacific [CSCAP], its purpose was to discuss growing nuclear tensions on the Korean peninsula. The meeting included dignitaries from North Korea, including their U.N. ambassador to the United Nations. UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl interviewed IEAS Director T.J.

IEAS Hosts the 54th Japan-America Student Conference

The Institute of East Asian Studies was pleased to host the Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) during August 8-12, 2002, for a portion of its 54th conference. Former IEAS Director Robert Scalapino is a member of the JASC National Advisory Committee.

Freeman Foundation grant announced.

UC Berkeley has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Freeman Foundation for the promotion of undergraduate education in Asian studies.
