Optimization and simulation modeling and quantitative analysis of ecosystem processes, with particular respect to thir responses to the changing global environment. He applies spatial analysis of ecosystem and landscape patterns to resource management and conservation biology. His work concerns policy and management for sustainable development, particularly in China.
