Scholarships and Awards

We have compiled a list of scholarships available to Asian Studies undergraduates. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list but we hope that it will offer you more guidance in your search for funding.


FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) summer awards are open to undergrads. Applicants must have junior or senior status when the award period begins and must intend to study the language at the 100AB (advanced) level or higher. Application due third week of January.


IIS (Institute of International Studies) Merit Scholar: $2,000 award given to undergraduates doing research in any area of international studies. Must be junior or senior with min 3.5 GPA. Research can be for honors thesis or conducted while studying abroad. Research plan is part of application. App usually due in mid-November.

Anne Scott award (two awards of $3,000 award given to two undergraduate students who have studied the Chinese language and who wish to use their language training to study Chinese history or culture, or to translate historical texts or to write a thesis. Project proposal is required. App due in mid-March (currently taking applications).


The Gilman Scholarship Program (US Dept of State) offers awards to U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Average award is $4,000. Deadline is March 4th, currently taking applications for spring and summer. Three application timelines for fall, spring and summer.

UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) $1 Million Initiative UCEAP offers dozens of scholarships--over $1.2 million for 2014-15 for students of all backgrounds and majors, and for all kinds of study abroad programs. Fall/spring/summer departure application timelines. Fall 2014 app is due March 15th.

Boren Awards for International Study: Focus on countries and languages critical to U.S. national security and diplomacy, international trade and sustainable development. Cantonese (but not Mandarin), Japanese, Korean and other Asian languages. Awards of $20,000 per year. Can study in most Asian countries, including China, Japan and South Korea. App due in early February.

Critical Language Scholarship provides fully-funded summer intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate and graduate students. Summer institutes in Japan, China, South Korea. Languages offered include: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish. Apps due March 14th, currently taking applications.
