- Asian Studies 10, Introduction to Asia (offered in fall only)
- One History Course (choose one): History 6A China (Early Empires); History 6B (Modern China); History 11 (India); History 14 (Japan); Southeast Asian Studies 10A (Intro to the Civilization of SEA-mainland); Southeast Asian Studies 10B (insular)
Lower Division Requirements
Once accepted in the major, the student is expected to select an area focus. Students must focus on either China or Japan.
- The Group in Asian Studies requires that students take the beginning and intermediate levels (1A/1B and 10A/10B, respectively) of language appropriate to the area focus.
- Students who are native speakers and/or whose level of proficiency is at the advanced level must take the Chinese or Japanese language proficiency test and provide the major advisor with documentation.
- Further study of the language after the intermediate level is not required but encouraged. The advanced classes are at the upper-division level and count toward upper division elective units (see below).
Upper Division Requirements
The Group in Asian Studies requires completion of at least 30 units (approximately 8 classes). The upper division courses are divided as follows:
- Two courses must be from the same department, allowing students to focus on a disciplinary cluster within their chosen area (China or Japan). One of the two must be a course whose primary purpose is to introduce the theories and methods of the discipline.
- One upper division course must be a course in Asian history (taken in the Department of History) appropriate to the student's area focus.
- At least four courses may be selected from the list of elective (Inter-Area/Interdisciplinary) courses listed on the Inter-Area/Interdisciplinary link.
- At least one of the elective courses must focus on a geographical region of Asia outside the student's area focus.
