What is IEAS?

UC Berkeley is one of the premier institutions for the study of East Asia in the United States. The Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) at UC Berkeley promotes teaching and research on East Asia in all disciplines and professional programs. The Institute and its regional centers sponsor a wide variety of activities including academic seminars and colloquia series, public lectures, cultural events, and other programs that facilitate deeper understanding of the Asia- Pacific region. It is the mission of the Institute to foster interaction among the academic, business, and professional communities on issues related to East Asia. facebook icon

  • IEAS Says Farewell to
    Five Long-Time Staff Members
On July 1, 2018 five IEAS staff members will retire after many (in fact, nearly 150 combined) years at the University of California, most of them spent at IEAS. Having worked with countless students, faculty, visiting scholars and UC colleagues over the years, they have dedicated much or all of their careers to East Asian studies, and have helped to build IEAS into one of Berkeley's top research units. They will be missed by colleagues far and wide, all of whom wish them only the best in retirement. Retiring (with the year they started at UC or IEAS) are:

Elinor Levine, Program Director of the Center for Chinese Studies (1985)

Stella Kwoh, Academic Director of the National Center for K-16 Chinese Language Pedagogy (1991)

Rochelle Halperin, Assistant to the Associate Director and Office Manager (1988)

Caverlee Cary, IEAS Program Director (1994)

    Martin Backstrom, Associate Director (1983)

Congratulations to Elinor, Stella, Rochelle, Caverlee and Marty!
