
2012 Berkeley Summer STARTALK Application

The 2012 Berkeley STARTALK Summer Institute for Chinese Language Teachers will be held from July 9 to July 27 (no class on Sundays, July 15 and 22). The admitted participants will receive full scholarship for the 9 professional units from UC Berkeley Extension and a certificate upon completion of the 136-hour program. This 17-day (9am-5pm each day) or 136 instructional hours of professional development consists of the following three of the five required courses toward the Teaching Chinese Certificate Program (cosponsored by UC Berkeley Extension):
- Linguistics for Chinese Language Teachers (3 units)
- Methods and Materials for Teaching Chinese I (3 units)
- Methods and Materials for Teaching Chinese II (3 units)
Teachers who meet the following criteria will be considered for participation:
- Able to participate in the full 17 days (136 hours) Mon-SAT July 11th-July 29th, 2012
- Currently teaching K-12 in public or private schools, as well as heritage schools.
- Holding teaching credentials in other subjects but planning to teach Chinese
- Completed a teacher training programs for teaching Chinese or teaching English and need for further professional development
- Hold an academic degree in Mandarin Chinese language and literature and plan to teach Chinese
