The Berkeley STARTALK Mandarin Language and Culture Teacher and Student Combination Program

The 2013 Berkeley STARTALK Mandarin Language and Culture Teacher and Student Program will be held from June 14 to July 1 from 9am to 5pm (no class on Saturdays and Sundays). This 12-day, 96-hour non-residential Teacher Program offers two required teaching methods courses toward the Teaching Chinese Certificate Program. The teacher participants will become acquainted with Standards-based instructions, STARTALK endorsed best practices, backward design, unit and lesson planning and other topics leading to better performance in the classroom. The teacher participants will receive full scholarship for 6 professional units from UC Berkeley Extension and a certificate upon completion of the summer program. The 5-day non-residential Student Program (June 24-June 28) program offers middle and high school students the opportunity to enhance their past Mandarin learning or to experience learning Mandarin as a new language. The primary outcome is to expose student participants to various aspects of language and cultural features of Chinese, and to provide Teacher Program participants with a real classroom setting for practicum. The student participants will receive scholarship for two college level units from UC Berkeley Extension and a certificate of completion of the program.

The 2013 Berkeley STARTALK Program offers “Methods and Materials of Teaching Chinese I & II”, two required courses (3-unit each) toward the Teaching Chinese Certificate Program cosponsored by UC Berkeley National Center for K-16 Chinese Language Pedagogy and the Extension.

Teachers who meet the following criteria will be considered for participant:

  • Able to participate in the full 12 days (96 hours) Monday-Friday June 14-July 1, 2013
  • Currently teaching K-12 in public, private and Chinese heritage schools
  • Holding teacher credentials in other subjects but planning to teach Chinese
  • Completed a teacher training program for teaching Chinese or teaching English and need for further professional development in teaching Chinese
  • Hold an academic degree in Chinese language and literature and plan to teach Chinese
