Berkeley Loses Two Pillars of Asian Studies
Over the summer, Berkeley lost two pillars of Asian studies.
George De Vos, a professor emeritus of anthropology and Japan scholar who taught at Berkeley from the 1960s until retiring in 1991, died on July 9, 2010, at home in Oakland at the age of 87.
Franz Schurmann, a China and global scholar, journalist, and former head of the Center for Chinese Studies, died in San Francisco on August 20, 2010, at the age of 84.
