Els van Dongen (彤丽思) is Associate Professor of History (Contemporary China) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She received her B.A. and M.A. (Chinese Studies and International Relations) from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL), Belgium, and her Ph.D. (Chinese Studies) from Leiden University, the Netherlands. Els has held visiting scholar positions at Peking University, Boston University, and the Academia Sinica and she is the author of Realistic Revolution: Contesting Chinese History, Culture, and Politics after 1989 (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Her articles have appeared in Asian Studies Review, Contemporary Chinese Thought, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Contemporary China, and Twentieth-century China, among other venues.
