Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships provide funding to students to encourage the study of less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area and international studies. These fellowships are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
At UC Berkeley, FLAS fellowships for East Asian language study are managed through the Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS). FLAS fellowships for Southeast Asian language study are managed through the Center for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS).
