Summer 2021 and AY 2021-22 FLAS fellowships, application deadline January 27

January 8, 2021

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships provide funding to students to encourage the study of less commonly taught foreign languages in combination with area and international studies. These fellowships are funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The application deadline is Wednesday, January 27, 2021. Full details and the application portal are available at the Graduate Division FLAS website.

FLAS fellowships for East Asian language study are managed by the Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS). Fellowships for Southeast Asian language study are managed by the Center for Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS). Both units are U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Centers.

Academic Year FLAS awards for graduate students cover fees up to $18,000 and provide a stipend of $15,000. Undergraduate awards cover fees up to $10,000 and provide a stipend of $5,000. NOTE: IEAS does not offer undergraduate awards.

Summer awards cover language program fees up to $5,000 and provide a stipend of $2,500. Students may apply for a summer FLAS award to study a language either in the U.S. or overseas at the intermediate or advanced level. Overseas language programs must meet the standards for course instruction and contact hours set by the U.S. Department of Education.

Special Note: COVID19 travel restrictions are still likely to be in place this coming summer for many countries. FLAS applicants are reminded also that UC Berkeley students and faculty must abide by U.S. Department of State advisories and University of California travel guidelines. Applicants should prepare to be flexible and also investigate options for study in the U.S. as an alternative to studying overseas.
