Dr. Dalferro received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Cornell University in 2021. Her dissertation examined silk production in Thailand, in particular among communities of Khmer silk producers in Surin province.

The United States’ One-China policy has been at the center of recent controversy. Rebutting Beijing’s accusations that Washington is changing the status quo, US officials have stressed that the United States remains committed to the One-China policy, but their explanations of the policy have not always been complete or accurate. This article discusses recent developments in the One-China policy and how to interpret the United States’ silence on Taipei’s assertions of sovereignty and independence.

Sarah Maxim retired as CSEAS Vice Chair in April, after twenty years at the center. Her successor is Alexandra Dalferro, who received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Cornell University in 2021. Dr. Dalferro’s dissertation examined silk production in Thailand, in particular among communities of Khmer silk producers in Surin province. She was a Visiting Fellow in the Thailand Studies Programme at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore in 2022, and is currently a lecturer at the National University of Singapore. She will join the center as CSEAS Program Director in May.

CCS has provided support for my research travel, thesis writing, and language study throughout my graduate years at Berkeley. Last summer, I was able to attend my first academic conference in Europe and presented a paper on the early standardization of Chinese characters under the generous support of The Liu Graduate Research Fellowship provided by CCS.

With funding from the CKS Undergraduate student support, I had the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive study abroad program in South Korea, during which I conducted independent research on the motivations that drive students to attend short-term, non-degree seeking programs.
I am so grateful to the Center for Korean Studies for providing me with funding to study the language intensively during several summers, present my research at various conferences, and connect with visiting scholars.

I managed to write a significant portion of my dissertation over the summer because of the Long-Ling Hsiao Chu and Chao Chi Chu Fellowship in Chinese Studies. The fellowship allowedme to completely focuson writing without worrying about finding supplemental funding. My dissertation examines a pivotal period in Chinese history, from the collapse of the Qing Dynasty to the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
