Thanks to the support of the Center for Japanese Studies graduate fellowship, I was able to begin my Ph.D. studies in modern Japanese art starting from the Fall of 2018. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of my project, which focuses mainly on Japanese war paintings and architectural history, I deeply appreciate this opportunity to join the fascinating and diverse Japanese studies community here at Berkeley and have already benefited from taking Japan-related seminars outside the field of art history as a first-year student. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I cannot afford the luxury to study here were it not for the generous help from the CJS.
