Beloved Professor Leaves Lasting Legacy: Bequest to Support the Study of the Pre-modern Indic World for Future Generations of Scholars

October 3, 2024

The P.Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for Silk Road Studies (TCSRS) is deeply honored to announce a generous bequest by UC Berkeley Art History Professor Joanna Gottfried Williams. The Juggernaut endowment is intended to support the teaching and study of the art and archaeology of the pre-modern Indic world (to include South, Southeast, and Central Asia) at the University of California, Berkeley. Managed by the TCSRS, funds will be used to support graduate fellowships, graduate and faculty research grants, and graduate courses in pre-modern South, Southeast, and/or Central Asian art and archaeology, as well as new research initiatives, academic collaborations, and resources aimed at deepening our understanding of the ancient Indic influences on Asia's artistic and intellectual heritage. We are profoundly grateful to the donor for her vision and dedication to preserving and promoting this important field of study.
