Early in the winter of 2020, I was bunkered down in the library of Waseda University in Tokyo working on my dissertation on theories and expressions of landscape in late-Meiji literature and visual culture. That’s when the coronavirus pandemic hit and, ultimately, led to the early termination of the research grant I had been living on. Turning to the Center for Japanese Studies for help, I applied for and received generous financial support in the form of a Graduate Student Fellowship. The fellowship allowed me to stay on in Tokyo and continue to conduct archival research essential to my project. CJS came to the rescue at a difficult time, and I could not be more grateful.
