I was living in Taiwan with my wife and daughter on a one-year Fulbright grant when the pandemic hit. We soon realized that we were incredibly, undeservedly fortunate to be living in one of the precious few places on the planet that was successfully controlling the virus’s spread. But my grant term expired in June 2020; a fellowship from the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) 2020/2021 year enabled us to stay in Taiwan. CCS support didn’t only allow me to continue my dissertation work in an ideal research environment. Just as importantly, it allowed me to keep my family safe during the pandemic and even give our child a priceless experience, attending first grade in-person in the Taipei public school system. I am exponentially grateful to CCS for this.
