Support from the Center for Chinese Studies has been crucial to my research on textual scholarship and poetic culture in late eighteenth-century China, as I explore how the classical literary tradition was being radically reconstituted and restaged on the eve of the Opium Wars. Fellowships from the Center have allowed me to travel to Taiwan for archival research and to devote entire summers to full-time dissertation work. Moreover, the colloquia, lectures, and workshops organized by the Center every semester serve as a continual source of inspiration, offering opportunities to learn and connect with scholars across a wide range of disciplines. Chinese studies at UC Berkeley would not be the same without the incredible resources that CCS provides or the community that it fosters.
