As an archaeologist working on Hokkaido, accessing data that is stored in Japan is paramount to the advancement of my research. Thanks to the generous support from the Center of Japanese Studies I was able to travel to Sapporo on two occasions and work at a laboratory extracting ancient plant materials from soil samples. The data I am recovering will hopefully help me uncover the history of human-environment relations and foodways in the region, which will constitute the bulk of my Ph.D. dissertation. I feel confident in saying that my experience as a doctoral student at Berkeley would not have been as smooth were it not for the opportunities CJS provides.
