Bio/CV: 

Gus Holley is a PhD student in ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley with a BA in music and Asian Studies from Carleton College. His research examines the contemporary revival of the court entertainment music of China’s Tang dynasty (618-907 CE), listening to historically-informed performances of Tang music as interventions in Chinese music historiography as imagined in popular media. Gus is also a performer of the Chinese pipa and student of Pudong pipa master and composer Gao Hong. He has received four gold medals for Chinese music performance in international competitions in both the United States and China, and in 2018 became the first American to win a gold medal at the Liaoyuan Cup International Pipa Competition in Beijing.
