Visiting Scholar Activities
Barbeque at Tilden Park
We have held numerous barbeques at Tilden Park, one of the oldest parks in the East Bay Regional Parks system and a true Bay Area jewel, where CCS, CJS, CKS and IEAS visiting scholars and their families gather together for a picnic potluck lunch. We start the day at the Little Farm where we feed and pet cute farm animals. For lunch, everyone brings a delicious dish for the potluck. After the picnic we continue to chat and get to know each other, while the children play on the playground.
Fairfield Halloween Adventure
To celebrate the fall harvest, we visit Larry’s Produce Pumpkin Patch, where scholars and families enjoy the famous hay maze, tractor rides, and of course picking a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. After lunch at a local restaurant we head to the famous Jelly Belly Factory where we learn all about the iconic American jellybean. After a tour of the factory, scholars enjoy free samples and purchase candy from the gift shop in time for Halloween.
Neighborhood Hike in Berkeley
A popular outing is exploring the city of Berkeley on foot. The first stop is the Saturday Farmer's Market where the visiting scholars sample locally grown vegetables and fruits. After the farmer's market and a short bus ride we embark on hike to the Panoramic Trail where we get incredible views of the cities around the bay. After the hike we enjoy a cup of tea and pastries at Nabalom, a local, cooperatively-owned bakery.
Oakland Museum / Chinatown
The Oakland Museum of California provides an aesthetically engaging and interactive experience as well as the opportunity to learn about the history of California. Afterwards, we walk to the busiest part of Chinatown for a delicious Dim Sum lunch at Joy Luck, one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in the area.
