Visiting Scholar Program

CCS COVID-19 Response

The CCS Visiting Scholar Program is aware that due to COVID-19 concerns worldwide, visiting scholars may experience delays in processing required application materials, and may need to adjust their anticipated program start dates as the situation develops. Given this, CCS is willing to be flexible regarding visiting scholar program start and end dates, as this may be impacted by travel restrictions and access to documentation.

Additionally, to help limit the coronavirus risk to our campus, community, and guests, the CCS office will be closed until further notice, with staff working remotely. Please forgive any delay in communication at this time.

Please contact Skye VanValkenburgh at ccs-vs@berkeley.edu if you have any questions about the visiting scholar program.

We encourage you to visit the UC Berkeley webpage with Coronavirus information, to learn more about Berkeley's response to COVID-19.

Take care, stay safe, happy, and healthy!

About the Program

Since the 1950s, scholars in the Chinese Studies field from throughout the world have been in residence as Visiting Scholars at the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS). These honorary affiliates are chosen on the strength of their proposed research projects and the ability of the faculty or library resources on the Berkeley campus to meet their research needs. CCS scholars conduct comparative and area studies research in their field of study on the People's Republic of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diaspora in other countries. We welcome applicants who wish to conduct independent or collaborative research (with prior approval from a faculty sponsor) on a research project of their choosing. CCS scholars generally remain at the Center for six months to two years and also participate regularly in the Center's scholarly life and academic programs. Scholars are granted basic access to the university library system, limited photocopy and mailing privileges, and shared office space (if available). For a full list of privileges, program prerequisites, and application instructions, please visit the Prospective Scholar’s page.
