About
In collaboration with IEAS and the other Centers housed within the Institute of East Asian Studies, the Center for Chinese Studies coordinates excursions and other activities for both visiting scholars, post-doctoral fellows, and their families as a means to provide a more enriching cultural and academic experience abroad.
Some of our current and past excursions have included:
Visiting Scholar Welcome Picnic
Fall 2019 Cohort
Every Fall we host the Visiting Scholar Welcome Potluck-Picnic at Tilden Regional Park, one of the oldest parks in the East Bay Regional Parks system and a true Bay Area jewel. Visiting Scholars and their families gather together with the CCS/IEAS staff for a picnic-potluck-BBQ extravaganza! Nearby the picnic area, scholars may visit the Little Farm, where adults and children alike can feed and pet cute farm animals.
C.V. Starr East Asian Library: Special Library Orientation
In September, we partner with the C.V. Starr East Asian Library to introduce incoming visiting scholars to the history of and the special collections at the East Asian Library, including physical and digital collections, as well as how to utilize the vast network of library resources on and off the Berkeley Campus.
CCS Visiting Scholar & Graduate Student Mixer
In order to facilitate exchanges between our CCS Graduate Student Community and our Visiting Scholars, in fall we also host the CCS Visiting Scholar Grad Student Mixer.
Stanford: Hoover Institute & East Asia Library Tour and Special Orientation
In Fall, we take a group of visiting scholars down to Stanford for a special introduction to the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean library collections. We also go on a tour of the Hoover Institute and conclude with a visit to the top of Hoover Tower.
Lunar New Year Banquet
The Center for Chinese Studies hosts a New Year Banquet to bring members of the CCS/IEAS and UC Berkeley community together in order to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
San Quentin Prison: Introduction to the U.S. Criminal Justice System & Inmate Rehabilitation Programs
A new addition to the yearly endeavors we hope to continue. In February of 2019, we took a group of visiting scholars to San Quentin State Prison where scholars and IEAS staff alike met with incarcerated individuals who talked about the wealth of prison rehabilitation programs offered by the prison. Scholars visited a cellblock. Prior to the field trip, we invited Professor Jonathan Simon, Director for the Center of Law a Society, to speak at IEAS and provide a special orientation for staff and scholars alike on the U.S /California State prison system.
Visiting Scholar Talks
The Visiting Scholar Talks are a lecture/discussion based series organized for and by CCS Visiting Scholars affiliated with the Center to present on their current research.
