This colloquium will present new approaches on the history of Japanese literature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with a focus on how archival research and novel methodologies can reshape our understanding of Japan’s long nineteenth century.

Youth worldwide is facing complex global challenges, making it essential for future leaders to adopt a global perspective to effectively address local, international, and cross-cultural issues. As two of the world's most influential nations, the United States and China share a responsibility to promote world peace and shared prosperity. Therefore, it is vital for emerging American leaders to deepen their understanding of China.

Apply Now! - Academic Explorers in China Program for Undergraduates in Summer 2025

An international team of scholars has launched a three-way collaborative project in Uzbekistan's high mountain regions to shed new light on the economic, social, cultural, and political dimensions of Turkic communities that thrived across Central Asia from the 6th to the 11th centuries.

The Center for Japanese Studies grants full scholarships to the Japan-American Student Conference for Berkeley undergraduate and graduate students. Awards are open to any full-time student with an interest in Japan.

The application for the 2025 Graduate Student Conference in Modern Chinese Humanities is now OPEN. Interested students from all institutions within the U.S. and abroad must complete the online application form below, which contains a description of the paper topic and its significance (up to 250 words) and a short bio (up to 100 words including current institutional affiliation). Please note that proposals should address primary sources and current scholarship related to their paper topic.

Lowell Dittmer, professor of Chinese Politics and former Chair of the Center for Chinese Studies (1979-1983), died April 15th, 2024.  He was a member of the Department of Political Science, UC Berkeley from 1978 until his retirement in 2022. He remained an active scholar and most recently published an edited volume, "China's Political Economy in the Xi Jinping Epoch."  A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 26 at 1:00pm at Temple Sinai, 2808 Summit Street, Oakland 94609.
