The Fellowship is intended to foster the academic careers of recent Ph.D’s and to allow the revision of the dissertation for publication, or for research on a new project. The Postdoctoral Fellow is expected to be in residence during the entire term. They will give a public lecture on their research as part of the Center for Chinese Studies Colloquium Series, and they are expected to take part in all regular Center for Chinese Studies events and workshops.

Welcome back to the new academic year on campus! A special warm welcome to first- and second-year graduate students whom we can finally meet in person! The COVID-19 situation continues to be unpredictable, but it is great to see colleagues, friends, and students on campus.

The Center for Chinese Studies will launch a new working group program in the AY2021-22 in support of research in the humanities and the social sciences. This program will provide opportunities for smaller groups of Berkeley faculty and advanced graduate students to share their research in progress, garner thoughtful and detailed feedback on papers or grants, brainstorm new projects, and discuss the latest published research related to their working group.

CSEAS has awarded Foreign Languages and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships for the 2021-22 academic year to Christian Gilberti (South & Southeast Asian Studies) to study Burmese and Daniel Owen (South & Southeast Asian Studies) to study Indonesian, and to Paul Salamanca (Sociology) and Alex Mabanta (Jurisprudence and Social Policy) to study Filipino.

China and Taiwan are becoming digital states in parallel — China as a digital authoritarian regime, and Taiwan as a digital democracy.

CSEAS is a founding member of the recently-established Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortium. The consortium was awarded a grant by the Henry Luce Foundation through its Luce Initiative on Southeast Asia (LuceSEA) with the mission of enhancing graduate education in Southeast Asian Studies across North America.

Founded in 1970, the South/Southeast Library (S/SEAL) is a dedicated reading room in Doe Library, UC Berkeley’s main research library. The library combines research and writing space, reference materials, and specialist consultation on site. It is a campus hub for multidisciplinary research and teaching in South and Southeast Asian studies, covering nineteen countries and over twenty indigenous languages.

CSEAS core faculty Prof. Penny Edwards (South & Southeast Asian Studies) has received the Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award for Late Career Faculty. The campus-wide award recognizes faculty for outstanding mentorship of graduate students at UC Berkeley. Prof. Edwards will be recognized at a virtual award ceremony this spring.

Taiwan has long defended itself from political meddling, including disinformation, by the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Attempts to influence Taiwan’s domestic politics have increased in both intensity and severity following the election of Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, with Beijing continuing to target the basic underpinnings of Taiwan’s democratic system.

Vinod K. Aggarwal examines Taiwan’s efforts to diversify its trade policy away from China, particularly its focus on securing a bilateral free trade agreement with the United States.

Jianye He, C.V. Starr East Asian Library's Chinese Studies Librarian, was nominated for the 2021 American Library Association's
"I Love my Librarian" Award. Out of 1,865 nominations this year, Jianye was one of only 10 librarians nominated to receive this prestigious honor.  Jianye He, who always goes above and beyond to aid the research community at Berkeley, has outdone herself in a year of national crisis amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. CCS is truly proud of her accomplishments and extremely grateful for her help over the years!
