CSEAS is pleased to announce that three UC Berkeley graduate students have received FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships for the 2023-2024 academic year. FLAS Fellowships are a wonderful opportunity for undergraduates and graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents to study a Southeast Asian language at the intermediate or advanced level, and to undertake related international or area studies coursework.

Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch Fellowship
The Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch Fellowship comprises two distinct programs: the "Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch Fellow of Political Science '' and the "Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch Fellow of East Asian Studies," each provides one fellow with $2,000 of funding. The Fellowship program aims to provide interested students, especially those of AAPI heritage, with financial support to conduct academic research focused on political/social/cultural/economic aspects of East Asia.

Global Taiwan Institute publishes a special issue of the "Global Taiwan Brief" featuring essays by U.S.-Taiwan Next Generation Working Group members.
In partnership with the British Library and the San Mateo County Office of Education, TCSRS and Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad trained 12 educators in London on primary source research about the ancient Silk Road in the 2024 Summer Institute “Cross-cultural Perspectives along the Silk Road.” Teachers and librarians from California K-12 schools spent four weeks meeting with librarians, curators, and expert faculty from UK universities to study ancient artifacts and manuscripts from China and Central Asia. Prof. Lisandro E. Claudio is the new Chair of the Center for Southeast Asia Studies, following Prof. Nancy Lee Peluso, who served as Chair since July 2020. CSEAS extends deep thanks to Prof. Peluso in appreciation of her guidance of the Center and achievements in supporting Southeast Asia Studies at Berkeley, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. With much excitement, CSEAS extends further thanks to Prof.

Dr. Dalferro received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Cornell University in 2021. Her dissertation examined silk production in Thailand, in particular among communities of Khmer silk producers in Surin province.
