Current Visiting Scholars may be eligible to extend their programs. Visiting Scholar programs are approved through the VSPA for one year at a time, and extensions beyond one year require an exceptional approval request from the faculty sponsor/PI or department chair, depending on the length of extension.
For foreign Visiting Scholars, the maximum length for extending is dependent upon the Scholar’s immigration category. For more information on the process of extending your DS-2019 and J-1 visa, please go here. For all other visa types, please consult your program sponsor.
Current Scholars that are interested in extending their program should contact CJS and their faculty sponsor/PI to discuss their intentions at least four months before their program will end. If approved, please submit the applicable form and required documents and payments:
a) Visiting Scholar Extension Form – Foreign scholars
or
Visiting Scholar Extension Form – US Citizens and Permanent Residents
b) C.V./Resume
c) Research Plan
d) Proof of Funding letter (dated from past 6 months)*
Please include copies for all J-2 dependents
e) Passport, Visa Stamp, I-94 record* (electronic copies can be made here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home)
f) Extension of Program/Transfer of Program Health Insurance Agreement (Please sign the bottom portion of this form)
g) An international money order or check drawn on a U.S. bank — made payable to "U.C. Regents" — for the following fees:

| $1,500/2,500 | University Services Fee. This entitles you to use the library facilities of the nine-campus UC library system, to audit classes with professors' permission, to use the university's wireless internet service, and to establish an e-mail account. . Visiting Scholars pay $1500 for their second year, while Visiting Student Researchers pay $2500. This fee can be paid online via credit/debit card. |
| $1,000 | CJS Visiting Scholar Program Fee. This one-time fee covers the administrative costs of your appointment as a visiting scholar at our center. It also entitles you to certain privileges and services at CJS for the duration of your appointment. |
| $500 | CJS Visiting Scholar Work Space Use Fee. This fee entitles you to a work space at our assigned Visiting Scholar carrel desks (depends on availability on your date of arrival) at our center for the duration of your appointment. |
