IEAS Translation Grants for UC Berkeley Graduate Students in East and Southeast Studies   

Description

The new Translation Grants program at the Institute of East Asian Studies supports UC Berkeley graduate students in East or Southeast Asian studies who wish to complete or begin work on a translation of a work of literature, philosophy, history (etc.), or film from an East or Southeast Asian language into English, for publication or research purposes. 

Each grant will be for $2,000. Three awards will be made in 2024-25.  

Application Instructions and Deadlines

Graduate students are invited to submit applications to IEAS. Three awards will be made for 2024-25. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The first round of review will begin on November 1, 2024 and close on January 31, 2025.  

         1)   A one-page (maximum) narrative description of the translation project

               situating the work within the broader context of East or Southeast Asian

               Studies.

         2)   A completion plan and timeline for the translation work, including any

              intended publication plan, platform, or release date.

         3)   A letter of support from a faculty sponsor familiar with the project that

               describes the significance of the topic, the student’s qualifications for

               carrying out the translation work, and impact of the work on the student’s

               progress.

         4)   A two-page CV

Successful applicants will be asked to credit the support of IEAS in any publications.

Completed applications should be submitted as a single PDF file to IEAS Associate Director Dylan Davis at davisds@berkeley.edu. Faculty support letters can either be submitted with the student’s application, or sent separately. Questions about the program may also be directed to him.
