Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch Undergraduate Fellowship in East Asian Studies
Purpose and Description
The Julia Chang Bloch Fellowship in East Asian Studies is funded through the F.Y. Chang Foundation, endowed by Stuart and Julia Chang Bloch. The Fellowship supports UC Berkeley undergraduate students in the completion of a research project dedicated to the study of strategic, political, economic and/or socio-cultural issues in one or more East Asian countries/territories (including China, Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Mongolia). Two fellowships of $1,500 are available in 2025.
Criteria and Eligibility
The Julia Chang Bloch Fellowship in East Asian Studies is awarded annually to undergraduate students in good standing who demonstrate outstanding academic promise. All currently-enrolled UC Berkeley undergraduates are eligible to apply, and they must be enrolled during the award period. Non-resident, resident, and international students are eligible. Students can be majors in any field or undeclared, as long as a suitable project is proposed. Projects can be course-related or extracurricular.
Application Procedures
The applicant is required to submit: 1) an Application Form; 2) a detailed study/project proposal no longer than 2 pages, single-spaced; 3) a budget breakdown of how the awarded funds will be utilized; 4) a current resume/CV. Please note that the funds shall not be used for purposes other than 1) thesis/research paper writing; 2) field research; and 3) attending and/or presenting at academic symposia. A letter of reference from a Berkeley faculty advisor is strongly recommended, and can be submitted to Dylan Davis, IEAS Associate Director, at davisds@berkeley.edu
Award Period, Uses, and Reporting Requirements
The fellowship is awarded in the spring term for use (normally) during the following academic year. IEAS will develop the initial list of finalists, which will then be forwarded onto the F.Y. Chang Foundation for final review and approval. The awards will be announced by late April, and funds will be disbursed from the F.Y. Chang Foundation. Fellowship recipients will share their research progress, midway through the fellowship period, to be published online, and submit a final report to USCET by December 1, 2025.
Deadline
Applications are due by 5:00pm (Pacific Time) on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 and should be submitted using the following Application Form.
