Language Study

At UC Berkeley

The Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies (SSEAS) offers language instruction in Burmese, Filipino, Indonesian, Khmer, and Vietnamese. 

Khmer language courses at UC Berkeley are available to students at UC Irvine and UCLA through a Distance Learning option. Burmese is offered by UC Berkeley as a Distance Learning option for UCLA students.

Summer Study in the U.S.

The Southeast Asia Summer Studies Institute (SEASSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is an intensive eight-week summer language program open to undergraduates, graduate students and professionals. Languages typically offered each summer are Burmese, Filipino, Hmong, Indonesian, Khmer, Lao, Thai and Vietnamese.

Summer Study in Southeast Asia

The U.S.-Indonesia Society (USINDO) and the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) program both run summer language programs in Indonesia. The University of Hawaii-Manoa administers the Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) program in Cambodia. The Center for Lao Studies runs a summer program in Laos that includes language instruction.

Study Abroad - UC Berkeley

University of California undergraduates can study in Southeast Asia during the academic year through the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP). EAP currently has programs in Singapore and Thailand. 

Study Abroad - Other

The Thai Studies Program at Pridi Banomyong International College at Thammasat University offers study options for foreign students ranging from a two week program to a full semester. 

The Blakemore Foundation provides fellowships for graduate students to pursue advanced-level study of Southeast Asian languages in the region during the academic year.
